So there’s some fiddling, a false start, a moment of static, and all the while a young man in dark armor is furrowing his brow as he flickers in and out of focus on the screen. Eventually he rediscovers the correct methods for the device and a relieved smile passes his expression.]

I believe this should be… [Wait. Which way was up? Did it have an up or was it more like a mirror? The device half turns again before Mordred stops, breathes a half sigh and continues.] Right.

I was here once before, though that time was brief. For that, I apologize. It wasn’t my intention to leave so soon. But it is my intention that this time I’ll be able to accomplish what I could not previously as a warden. I will not waste this opportunity twice and I hope that with time I am able to prove that to you all. I will help in any way I can.

[Forcefully, he’ll relax. Despite the false starts and technology woes, that didn’t sound half bad. Right? He can only hope.]

I would have assumed some morals to be universal. That acts of kindness and compassion are similar regardless of where you are, and actions that would harm others would be against such morals.

I have known and lived in communities where kindness and compassion are portrayed universally as weaknesses, detriments to the group as a whole and cracks in the design of structure.

What would you say to these?

It is not weak to care for those around you, nor does it lack structure. It can only be beneficial to the whole and doesn't change the fact that it is moral.

It is only ashame for the community if these morals are viewed as weak.

But you misunderstand. They do not consider kindness a moral at all. You think that morality is a universal construct. I am here to tell you it is not.

[He frowns to the conflict.]

Then what are their morals?

Strength. Unity. Obedience. An adherence to the regime and to each other, but only within the confines of a set ordinance.

And the set ordinance?

That weakness and sentimentality are not to be tolerated.

But in unity is there not kindness?

In unity, strength. But not individual consideration.

If a man is sick, then with this philosophy he is abandoned for slowing down the whole. Is this the strength you speak of?

In a sense, yes. If there are not facilities in place to assure he will recover.

[He shakes his head.]

I could never agree with such morals. Even in times of war, when such actions may be necessary, it would give me no joy to do so. I'm sorry if that offends you.

It doesn't offend me. They are not my morals. I'm merely repeating the ideals of an overzealous army.

Then what are the morals you have set for yourself?

Do you often ask very personal questions of near strangers?

An understanding of the morals you expect to be set into place as standard and the potential differences that may be anticipated.

Morals are not the same as laws. I break laws frequently in accordance with my morals. That is not to say I don't respect the laws, when they're needed.

Yet many laws originally stem from morals, do they not? But I do agree with you, there are differences between them. Sometimes it is the law that is wrong, not one's morals.
